Acting director at the Ministry of Basic Education, North East region, Mr Vumani Luckson has applauded his region for doing well in the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE), Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) and Botswana General Certificate in Secondary Education (BGCSE).
Mr Luckson, who was speaking at the 2018 North East region excellence awards in Francistown on August 17, noted that the region was made up of two sub regions, Masunga and Francistown.
He said the region always topped all the regions in the PSLE examinations and got position two for JCE every year.
He said for BGCSE, three senior secondary schools in the region managed to secure positions in the national top 10 positions for the past two years.
“Every year we have learners in the top achievers at the Botswana Examinations Council annual excellence awards,” he added.
Mr Luckson explained that the annual awards continued to provide the needed motivation to students against the backdrop of declining academic performance.
He informed stakeholders that the north east region has developed an interactive education site dubbed ‘e-thuto’ that allowed teachers, parents and students to work together online for the betterment of students’ academic performance.
Also speaking at the awards ceremony, senior lecturer in the faculty of education at the University of Botswana, Dr Phillip Balawa said the excellence awards were not just a celebration of high performance but also an opportunity for stakeholders to share experiences and explore better ways to move forward.
“We believe that the high fliers who have brought us here today will play a leading role in helping us achieve the national goal of becoming a knowledge based economy rather than the current resource based economy,” he added.
Addressing students, Dr Balawa informed them that excelling does not come easy and that an individual needed to study hard. ENDS
