Police appeals to public
24 Apr 2018
The police are appealing to the general public to help them arrest a man who raped a nurse who was on duty at Extension 2 clinic in the early hours of April 22.
The gruesome rape has left increasing fears about the security of health workers in health facilities particularly the ones that offer 24 hour service.
This has raised fears and worries in the general public with some calling on the government to install CCTV cameras in all the health facilities.
In an interview, the Head of the Botswana Police Service Public Relations Unit, Assistant Commissioner Dipheko Motube said whilst investigations on the incident are still on-going, they are appealing to any member of the public who might have witnessed the incident to help them with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrator who is still at large.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Wellness noted in a statement that it regrets and condemns this inhuman and unfortunate incident and also appealed to the general public and stakeholders as well as the community to work together in ensuring that public places such as health facilities remain safe and trusted by users.
“The Ministry regrets this incident and assures the public that measures are being put in place to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in future.”
Extension 2 clinic operating hours have been reduced to 1930 pm effective from April 23 until April 25, 2018 to allow the ministry to deal with the issue.
The statement states that normal services will resume on April 26, 2018 and that in the meantime, the Botswana Police Service will provide surveillance to facilities offering 24 hour service. BOPA
