Accident claims seven lives

Maunatlala and Palapye police are investigating an accident in which seven people lost their lives during the Easter Holidays.

Maunatlala police station commander, Assistant Superintendent Mopedi Moipolai said in an interview that six people lost their lives along B151 road, two km away from Kgagodi junction when a combi they were travelling in had a head on collision with a mini bus around half past four on Friday morning.

Asst Supt Moipolai said the combi was carrying 11 people from Modipane Eloyi Church who were on pilgrimage to Tsetsebjwe whilst the mini bus was carrying 10 people from South Africa.

He said four people who were travelling on a combi which was carrying members of the Eloyi church were certified dead on arrival at Palapye hospital, whilst one member died the following day. One South African also died during the course of the day on Friday.

He said 13 people sustained serious injuries, adding that seven of them were admitted to Nyangabgwe Hospital whilst six were admitted to Mahalapye hospital.

Asst Supt Moipolai said the cause of the accident is not known yet as police investigations are still ongoing. Names of the deceased are still withheld.

In addition, Maunatlala police are also investigating an accident in which a BMW X5 hit a tree and overturned at Kgagodi on Saturday afternoon.

Asst Supt Moipolai said the driver and one passenger who were driving on that car sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Marina and Mahalapye hospitals.

He said police investigations were ongoing to find out the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile Palapye police are investigating an accident in which a BMW car hit a cow and overturned along A1 road near Madiaela lands, a kilometer away from Makoro Veterinary gate.

Palapye police station commander, Superintendent Waboraro Ramaja said the accident occurred on Friday night at around half past eleven. He said the driver of the vehicle who was alone, was certified dead on arrival at Palapye hospital.

Names of the deceased are still withheld while police investigations are still ongoing.

Eloyi Church leader, Bishop Sekai Jakoba expressed his heartfelt sympathy on the families of the deceased, calling for members of his church to pray against accidents.

He said he and other members had been distraught by the accident because they expected all members to arrive at Tsetsebjwe safely. Bishop Jakoba said the incident called for them to strengthen their faith in God. ENDS
