Kgatleng behind with maintenance cllr
21 Mar 2018
Kgatleng District Council is currently experiencing a challenge in maintenance as it was previously mentioned in the last full council session.
This was said by Kgatleng District Council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong at a full council opening on Monday.
Mr Morolong said there were three major maintenance works that were currently ongoing at Dikwididi, Seingwaeng and Boiteko primary schools.
He further said a memorandum was submitted seeking funds to the tune of P23.6 million for maintenance under capital budget.
The maintenance works are planned for Kgomodiatshaba, Khurutshe, Dikgonnye, Kgafela, Modipane, Tlhaakgame, Letsebe, Mabalane, Mmusi and Mmadipamo primary schools. “With the approval of these funds, the challenge will be partially addressed as the number of facilities that need immediate attention will be reduced,” he said. Mr Morolong explained to the house that out of 4.66km of planned paved road, only 4.14km had been completed.
“The challenge has been delays in supply of roads material by the engaged supplier,” he said. Mr Morolong said the project for the construction of a culvert along Oodi-Matebele road to the tune of P4.6 million was under construction and was currently at 25 per cent complete.
He assured the council that when the project was complete, it would address problem faced by students at Oodima Junior Secondary School during the rainy season. Mr Morolong said dry grading of roads was carried out for most of the district roads adding that many roads that use gravel course had been depleted due to continuous grading and makes proper grading impossible.
He further said roads need gravelling to improve their gravel wearing course.
Also, he said the district streetlights illumination level was currently at 80 per cent as opposed to the set target of 90 per cent.
This, he said was attributable to the unplanned power cuts that affect electronic furniture as well as suppliers who delivered wrong materials critical for maintenance.
Mr Morolong said the problem was further compounded by perpetual vandalism of streetlights furniture more especially poles. “The accidents mostly occur at night and no records of the perpetrators are available. I therefore implore members of the public to assist the council by reporting such incidents,” he said. When briefing the council about the supply and installation of streetlights at Makgophana Bridge, Mr Morolong said the project had been delayed by appeals from respective bidders.
Mr Morolong said the contract was awarded on March 2, 2018. ENDS
