Crime in Molepolole remains high - Deputy Divisional Commander
20 Dec 2017
Botswana Police deputy divisional commander (South), Mr Boikhutso Dintwe has advised residents to intensify security to protect their valuables.
Speaking during the Home and Business Security Exposition orgnised by Kweneng District No 11 Botswana Police Service Saturday at Mafenyatlala Mall in Molepolole, Mr Dintwe said security remained crucial in the protection of property, hence it was important to take advantage of every means available to guard against criminal acts.
Mr Dintwa said measures needed to be put in place to frustrate criminals.
With Molepolole being second in crime rate after Mogoditshane, he said a holistic approach was necessary to address the appalling behaviour that had since turned the village into ‘Sodom and Gomorra’.
The most prevalent crime in Molepolole, he said, included house break-ins, murder, rape and threat to kill.
Mr Dintwe said the situation required a collective approach such as formation of community policing or Ntebela-Ke-Go-lebele to complement security measures that one might have.
Meanwhile, Molepolole Administratrative Authority assistant district commissioner, Ms Ikgopoleng Lekwape challenged parents to take responsibility in helping to fight social ills among children through ensuring proper upbringing.
“It is the responsibility of us parents to play meaningful roles against deplorable behaviour of our children,” stated Ms Lekwape.
She expressed displeasure in the manner in which alcohol consumption was rife among girls in Molepolole, a situation she said highlighted lack of discipline and poor upbringing.
Such behaviour, she said, influenced the increase in crime rate in the village, especially rape and related crimes.
Ms Lekwape said challenges such as teenage delinquency led to the decline of academic performance of schools in the district.
“It is disappointing that crime situation in Molepolole is devastating, but parental guidance appears to be lacking,” she said. Ms Lekwape said unless parents took a meaningful role in addressing crime, the status quo shall remain.ENDS
