Police arrest man in possession of dagga

During their continued search to uproot drugs in and around Gaborone, police have arrested a middle-aged man at Tlokweng border gate in possession of high grade dagga substance on Wednesday.
Botswana Police Service crime intelligence director and Senior Assistant Commissioner, Nunu Lesetedi said in an interview that the man was found in possession of 250 kilogrammes of 26 wrapped plastic bags worth close to P25 000. He explained that the dagga was contained in his car compartment, adding that the suspect is a tenant at St Joseph’s College, something he said was worrying as he might be selling the drug to students.
Assistant Commissioner Lesetedi said the dagga was being ferried from Swaziland and that the suspect will appear in court soon to face charges of drug possession.
He said the operation will continue because it appears Botswana is now a huge market for dagga and related substances because of the high demand of the substances. He explained that this demand is high as evidenced by a recent truck which was found full of bags of dagga in one location in Gaborone.
Assistant Commissioner Lesetedi further explained that though the owner of the truck had requested for its release, the court turned his request down because it is going to be used as an exhibit and evidence during trial.
He could not tell how many kilogrammes of dagga they have already confiscated since the start of their operation in recent.ENDS
