Although Molepolole continues to record high crime rate, police are working round the clock to reverse the situation, Superintendent Charles Mbengwa of Molepolole Police Station has said.
Speaking in an interview, Supt Mbengwa revealed that they recorded a decrease in most cases reported this year from January to June compared to January to June last year. Frequently registered cases were store and house break-ins.
He said there was a drastic decrease of burglary cases with 49 against 89 recorded last year same period. “From January to June we have recorded 66 cases of house and 62 of store break-ins,” he stated.
“These numbers are still high and we are working tirelessly to make sure that the offenders are taken to task.
The other statistic we want to see decrease drastically is that of murder and store break-ins,” he said.
He noted that Molepolole with a population of over 60 000 required commitment, not only from the police officers, but community as well if crime levels were to be reversed, but expressed optimism with police outreach programmes geared towards addressing crime in the village.
“The recent walk against crime is one of the strategies we have put in place to reduce the crime rate in the region.
We were pleased to see many people from all walks of life joining us in the walk, especially the youths. We used the walk as an outreach to the community to be under one place and talk about ways in which we can make our village a batter place.
The walk was also used as a way for the community to share ideas on how they could assist us since we have one common goal of reducing crime rate in the village and surrounding places,” he said.
Supt Mbengwa said to curb crime levels they had dispatched police officers on team patrols over the area.
“There are areas that are a headache and they include depots, some of which operate illegally, or operate beyond the stipulated times,” he said. BOPA
