Stock theft on the rise
05 Mar 2017
Livestock farmers at Gamarotswana cattle crush have complained of an increase in stock theft cases in their area.
They voiced their concerns during a workshop organised by the Kanye District Road Safety Committee recently.
The farmers committee chairperson, Mr Kewanyena Warona had informed the meeting that they had in the recent past experienced a rise in stock theft cases in their area.
Mr Warona said the situation was exacerbated by the fact that cattle rustlers usually used the fenced, but neglected Water Utilities Cooperation (WUC) generator yard as a holding facility for them to capture their livestock.
“We have realised that they hold our cattle in that yard, which makes it easy for them to drive them into a truck, so we plead with WUC to move swiftly to lock the gate to deter the thieves from using the yard as a holding facility,” Mr Warona pleaded.
Mr Warona also urged Kanye police to make it a habit to patrol the area.
He was optimistic that police visibility could help the situation.
For his part, Sejelo traffic officer, Assistant Superintendent Ernest Sesinyi promised to relay farmers’ concerns to the relevant officers for action to be taken.
Superintendent Sesinyi also advised the farmers to inform WUC about the situation. ENDS
