Increasing crime rate worries police
17 Jan 2017
The acting station commander for Serowe police, Assistant Superintendent Bopelo Ntathiwa has expressed worry over the increasing number of crime rate in the village.
Speaking in an interview with BOPA, Asst Supt Ntathiwa said drunken driving was a problem with 70 cases recorded in 2015 and 67 in 2016.
He said house break-ins, theft and burglary were offences that needed to be addressed.
In 2015, eight cases of house break-ins, theft and burglary were recorded while in 2016 nine were registered.
Asst Supt Ntathiwa said more needed to be done to guard against incidences of house break-ins, theft and burglary as well as rape of which seven cases were recorded in 2015 and five in 2016.
“Residents should not think twice when it comes to enhancing security in their homes,” he advised.
He said Serowe was not a well-lit village and as such, criminals take advantage of that and use bushes as their hiding place.
He encouraged residents to effectively use programmes such as neighbourhood watch, as most of the incidences took place in the afternoon.
Mr Ntathiwa said most rape cases happened at night as women walked home from bars and night clubs.
He advised the public to avoid bushy areas and passages at night noting that walking in groups also helped. BOPA
