Back to school succeeds
24 Oct 2016
Ms Tawana Themiso is a true embodiment of a popular saying ‘it is never too late to pursue education.
When the Back to School programme was introduced in 2012, the 29-year-old did not despise it like her age mates did.
For her, it came at the right time as she used it as a platform to achieve her dreams in architecture.
Today, she prides herself with the National Craft Certificate (NCC) in Architecture Drafting that she acquired from Nswazwi Brigades.
Ms Themiso said failure to do well in her Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) never dampened her determination to be an architect, the dream she had long held since her teen years.
“Ever since I finished BGCSE in 2005, I never had a chance to continue with my studies as I did not perform well in some of the subjects. When I heard of the Back to School programme, I never looked back for I knew it was an opportunity that would help me achieve my dream,” she said.
Ms Themiso said through relevant assistance, she managed to bridge the gap and eventually got admitted for a three year NCC course, which she satisfactorily completed last year.
She now perceives the programme as a stepping ladder that opened up doors of opportunities for greater things.
She is currently in the process of registering her company, which will deal with architectural services.
“Though I am in a process to register a company, I sometimes get temporary offers and I do not despise the little that I get paid as it helps me pull the strings together and be able to make ends meet,” she said.
She further highlighted that one other thing she appreciates is having underwent self-discipline training at a boot camp. She said it has helped her to be focused and remain collected.
Ms Themiso urged other youth who are trapped in the same challenge to step out and embrace the programme. ENDS
