Strengthened cooperation between government, the private sector and communities remains vital for addressing daily challenges and securing practical solutions for local residents.

This was said by Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Mr Moeti Mohwasa, during the handover of a police porta cabin to the Mogoditshane Police Station at the Gabane roadblock yesterday.

Mr Mohwasa noted that the donation, courtesy of GH Group, demonstrated what can be achieved when government and private partners aligned to address pressing needs.

“Government remains responsible for the provision of public services and for ensuring that our security institutions are appropriately supported. At the same time, responsible governance requires us to use public resources prudently and to recognise opportunities where other stakeholders can complement public efforts,” he said.

He highlighted that the gesture showed how resources across society can unite to reinforce public institutions, noting that a nation’s true strength lied in what society achieved collectively around a common purpose.

“Your support goes beyond providing a physical structure. It contributes to the working conditions of our police officers and, by extension, to the capacity of the Botswana Police Service to serve this community,” Mr Mohwasa added.

“I encourage other businesses and organisations to look at this example and consider where their resources, expertise and goodwill can make a meaningful contribution to the communities in which they operate,” he said.

He emphasised that real development was defined not by a project’s size or budget, but by whether a practical solution was put in place to resolve a problem.

For officers stationed at Gabane, the new porta cabin offered the much-needed shelter, improved working conditions and greater dignity.

“The environment in which they perform these functions matters. When we strengthen the conditions under which they work, we strengthen their ability to deliver the services expected of them. However, security cannot be the responsibility of the police alone. Safe communities are built through cooperation between law enforcement and the people they serve,” Mr Mohwasa said.

He urged the police to receive the facility as both a practical resource and a vote of public confidence and encouraged them to maintain professionalism and handle the asset responsibly.

Presenting the project overview, GH Group representative, Ms Sheila Taylor, explained that the company stepped in after noticing the dire working conditions of officers at the roadblock during the construction of their nearby facility, the A10 Mall.

Ms Taylor noted that providing the structure as part of their corporate social responsibility aligned directly with government calls for safer and more convenient environments for public servants.

Receiving the donation, deputy commissioner of police for support services, Mr Stephen Tsheko said joining hands through initiatives like Twantsho Borukhutlhi was essential to achieving safety goals.

He noted that roadblocks remained a crucial strategy for curbing crime, adding that the donation tackled pressing operational hurdles such as dilapidated infrastructure. ENDS
