Standard Chartered Bank through the Adopt-a-School initiation has donated a P50 000 cheque to Moselewapula junior secondary school towards the construction of the school’s boundary wall.
When handing over the cheque, Standard Chartered Bank Botswana, chief executive officer, Mr Moatlhodi Lekaukau said his bank’s partnership with the school began in 2014 when it identified the school as the right fit for their desire to contribute to the national Adopt-a-School initiative.
Mr Lekaukau highlighted that it is the school’s continual academic excellence that has drawn them to partner with them.
“We as an institution and I, personally, have continued to be impressed at the consistent turnout of good results as evidenced by your year-on-year strong pass rates,” Mr Lekaukau said.
He said when they get involved in projects they look to address the relevant questions of what is needed and where a long lasting and broad-based impact can be made.
“We believe today’s project ticks all the right boxes and is one that will be enjoyed by many for years to come,” he said.
Mr Lekaukau said the bank’s involvement in the education sector extends beyond its partnership with Moselewapula junior secondary school and is part of its core sustainability agenda.
He further said in 2015, they launched the Standard Chartered Botswana Education Trust which supports education and learning for the exclusive benefit of the citizens of Botswana.
“Through this initiative, our shareholders sold P32 million of Standard Chartered Bank listed shares to the trust. The dividends from these shares will be used to support education initiatives,” he said.
Mr Lekaukau further committed a P50 000 get all or nothing donation to the school if they can get position in the overall junior certificate examinations this year.
For his part, Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Moiseraele Goya thanked Standard Chartered Bank for caring about the future and choosing to plant a seed of prosperity that will leave an indelible mark in the minds of learners.
“We can only hope that the support that business is extending to schools could translate into more hard work for schools to improve their academic rankings,” said Mr Goya. ENDS
