King Mswati III of Swaziland wrapped up his visit to Botswana for independence celebrations with a visit to Chobe.
King Mswati, also SADC chairperson, took a boat cruise in the Chobe River as well as a drive along the river bank for wildlife viewing. He applauded Botswana for its conservation efforts.
Accompanied by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Mr Nonofho Molefhi, the King also visited two historical baobab trees at Kasane police station.
Kasane station commander, Superintendent Silton Fidzani, said the two trees played an important role in the administration of justice. “Liberation struggle fighters used to also seek refuge around this tree and rest before making their way to Zambia,” he said, adding that the trees were also used as a recruitment station for South African mine labourers.
King Mswati III expressed delight at the fact that the trees had been well taken care of and preserved for future generations to learn about their significance.
“Ï urge young people to carry on this legacy of preservation to ensure that the trees are well kept for other generations to come,” he said. Ends
