Two drown in Lake Ngami

21 Dec 2015

Scuba divers have retrieved bodies of two men who drowned in Lake Ngami on Friday (December 18)  night.

The bodies were retrieved on Saturday and Sunday, according to Sehithwa police's Assistant Superintendent Moutlwatsi Ikobeng.

The two are 43-year-old Mr Sekunga Revence, who hails from Namibia, but resided at Dukwi Refugee Camp and Mr Gaofengwe Semadi (33) of Komana in Ngamiland.

Assistant Supt Ikobeng said the two drowned when on a mission to catch fish in Lake Ngami.

He said Mr Revence’s body was found on Saturday evening while Mr Semadi’s body was retrieved on Sunday at around 1pm with the help of the police and Botswana Defence Force (BDF).

Assistant Supt Ikobeng said the police did not suspect any foul play, adding that the deceased were with a friend who reported the drowning incident to the police in the early hours of Saturday.

The man, he said, reported that they caught fish on Friday morning and his mates did a second trip at around 4pm.

The man reportedly left to get a vehicle to transport their catch but when he returned at 7pm his friends were no where to be seen. He later reported to the police after realising that the deceased were gone for a long period.

Furthermore, Assistant Supt Ikobeng said it was disheartening that people continued with illegal fishing at Lake Ngami. He cautioned people to comply with the hunting ban, which would elapse in February next year. Ends
