Police happy with cooperation
27 Dec 2012
The police are pleased with the level of cooperation extended to officers manning road blocks by motorists during the festive season.
Superintendent Mahoko Tamajobe of Botswana Police Service public relations office said in an interview that they appreciated the good behaviour that motorists displayed; something he said showed positive development in drivers’ attitudes.
Thus, Supt Tamajobe appealed to motorists and the public to extend the same cooperation in the the new year. Notwithstanding, Supt Tamajobe said they registered at least 56 road traffic accidents of which only one life was lost, 10 sustained serious injuries while 23 sustained minor injuries.
Again, he said 558 motorists were booked for speeding while 141 motorists were nabbed for driving without drivers licenses. Furthermore, he said 41 drivers were arrested for careless driving while 22 others were booked for using hand held mobile phones while driving.
He said 12 drivers were fined for failure to produce their licenses upon request while 36 motorists were booked for drinking while driving.
Also, the department of transport and road safety crew was also on the lookout for vehicle road worthiness and level of compliance with traffic regulations. On the other hand, booze buses were also roving from one area to another to check sobriety.
Meanwhile, the police superior was happy at the relatively few cases of house breaking recorded with their offices. That, he said was because some people stayed home during the holidays. He thus implored others not to leave their houses unguarded or unoccupied when they travel. ENDS
