Hit and run accidents in Maun are increasing at an alarming rate, Senior Superintendent Chabaesele Kesupetswe has said. He said in an interview that in most cases, drivers ran away after causing accidents avoiding alcohol tests.
Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said, over the weekend only, they received two cases of this nature, among other traffic offences.
On Saturday, he said, a government Land Cruiser hit on a Pajero vehicle from behind along Sedie main road.
He said the Land Cruiser driver then escaped and he was arrested the following day in Sedie ward. He said the vehicle was also found abandoned the same day.
Senior Superintendent Chabaesele said another case of hit and run involved a Nissan Sun, driven by a 27-year-old man.
The vehicle hit a fence, two houses and an electric pole.
He said the driver left the vehicle and ran away leaving two passengers behind who sustained injuries.
He said the driver who sustained a forehead injury was later found by members of the community who rescued him and took him to the hospital.
Snr Supt Kesupetswe said the three including the driver were still hospitalised at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital .
He said both drivers might face charges of driving without due care, failing to stop at the crime scene and driving with the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, Snr Supt Kesupetswe said they were investigating an accident in which a 26-year-old woman lost control of the vehicle she was driving and it overturned at Somelo.
He said two people including the driver sustained injuries. They were recuperating at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital.
However, Mr Kesupetswe encouraged motorists involved in road accidents to wait for the police at the scene or alternatively drive to the police where they would be assisted.
He added that failing to stop at the scene was an offence.
Snr Supt Kesupetswe said they were also investigating a case of theft in which unknown people stole a laptop and a phone from a woman.
He said the incident occurred in the main mall on Sunday during the day and the goods were all valued at P13 000.
He appealed to members of the public to take responsibility on their valuable goods such as cell phones and laptops. He advised revellers not to take large sums of money when going to entertainments. Ends
