Student miscarries in hostel
11 Nov 2015
A form four student at Moshupa Senior Secondary School had a miscarriage in the hostel in the wee hours of Thursday last week.
Speaking in an interview, chief education officer for the Moshupa Sub-district, Mr Gofenyang Ponoesele, said the matter was reported to the matron by some students.
The chief said the student was allegedly eight months pregnant, but the school authorities were not aware of the pregnancy.
He said the parents were in the dark either about the pregnancy although the students were recently released to go home during independence holidays.
Mr Ponoesele said they reported the incident to the police while the foetus was at Mmaseetsele clinic to establish what might have caused the miscarriage.
Meanwhile, Mr Ponoesele advised students to take studies seriously and delay involvement in sexual activities until they have finished school.
He said the incident confirmed that some students were already involved in sexual relationships noting that at least 10 students drop out of school every year due to teenage pregnancy.
The deputy station commander at Moshupa police, Mr Joel Sebotho confirmed the report.
He said the foetus was awaiting post mortem analysis at the mortuary.
On other issues Mr Sebotho urged residents of Moshupa to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of electricity cable thieves in the village.
He said they had so far received seven reports last week alone. Ends
