Residents attack two public officers

Maun police have evacuated two public officers from Mababe in Ngamiland after some angry residents attacked them on October 1.
Maun Station Commander Superintendent Peter Gochela said the two officers, a nurse and a teacher, both stationed at the village were attacked by a mob over a love relationship issue.
Narrating the story, the police chief said the officers attacked one of the residents who had gone to their house searching for his girlfriend.
He later came back with fellow residents and the angry mob attacked the two officers in retaliation until the local police intervened.
He said the officers were taken to Maun as residents were still angry. “I have to meet their supervisors and see how best we can assist them.”
On other issues, Maun police have recorded 33 cases of assault and five cases of unlawful wounding during the Independence holidays.
The police head said the assaults took place at night when people were returning from entertainment centres. Alcohol consumption has been blamed as the main contributing factor.
He said people were assaulted for issues such as cigarettes while others were beaten for no apparent reasons.
About 27 cases of theft were also recorded during the holidays. Most of the incidents took place in homes where people were robbed of their assets such as cellular phones, lap tops, clothes and appliances.
Superintendent Gochela said no serious incidents such as murder and rape were recorded.
He thanked the community for their good behaviour, noting that the holidays were calm besides the few incidents he had mentioned. ENDS
