Councillors propose regulation of private tutors
06 Jul 2015
Lobatse councillors have approved a motion that seeks the Ministry of Education Skills and Development (MoESD) to develop regulatory standards for private tutors.
Presenting the motion before the just ended council meeting last week, the councillor for Tsopeng North, Mr Gofaone Kedise said the mushrooming of tutors around the town was a concern and a call for immediate action.
Councillor Kedise questioned the integrity of the tutors and urged parents to seek guidance from regulatory bodies in the education sector to check their credibility.
He said the law should ascertain the legality of their operations as their prices were absurdly high, a factor he said gnaws away at the household incomes of many families.
Mr Kedise said most private tutors operate from their homes, exposing the girl child to abuse.
The councillor for Peleng West, Ms Kearoma Moreeng seconded the motion arguing that a lot of money was spent on tutors even though students’ academic results remain unsatisfactory.
The council adopted and passed the motion. Town mayor, Ms Malebogo Kruger said it would be passed to relevant authorities. Ends
