Official urges businesses to take security seriously

Senior Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse has appealed to business operators and residents of Letlhakane to be security sensitive.

Senior Supt Gabathuse said during a recent interview that it had been realised that in District No 8 policing area that people were not security sensitive such that most of the businesses were left without any security devices.

She appealed to members of the public to install security devices in their valuable commodities.

Senior Supt Gabathuse noted that people should prioritise security, stating that whenever an expensive commodity is being put in place, security measures should be considered to guard against any theft. She noted that target hardening mechanisms such as security guard, burglar bars, dogs and alarms should be installed.

Failure to put security devices to property, she said proved that people were not taking issues of security seriously.

Letlhakane, she said was an area that has opportunities, saying people were flocking the village with high expectations of getting employment opportunities and turn to crime when their dreams are shattered.

This follows various incidents that involved store break and theft, back-up system batteries of mobile network grid worth P222 000 were stolen in district No 8 policing area.

The batteries were stolen from different mobile networks being Botswana Telecommunication, Orange, Mascom and be- Mobile. No one had been arrested in relation to the incident.

In another incident, goods worth P30 000 were stolen in some shops. Three suspects were nabbed by the police during a manhunt and were found with the goods in their possession. The police managed to recover goods worth P26 000.

Senior Supt Gabathuse said 49 sachets of substance suspected to be dagga were also found in their possession.

Furthermore, the police in District No 8 policing area were investigating a case in which three Zimbabwean men were under investigation for stealing solar panels at Mmeya Village.

According to Senior Supt Gabathuse the police mounted a roadblock on intervention after a tip-off from reliable sources.  Two suspects had been arrested whilst one was still on the run. The suspects were caught in possession of the panels.

During the manhunt, the police managed to arrest three men in possession of undeclared cigarettes with 3900 packets worth P52 500. The suspects were two Zimbabwean nationals and one Motswana national. Ends
