Court postpones Trojan robbery case

11 Nov 2014

A trial in which two men are accused of robbing Trojan Security Company over P2 million in August 2011 has been postponed to May next year.

The duo, Gerald Zikhale and Meshack Kangangwane aged between 35 and 41, were jointly charged with Motlhatlhobi Bagopi and Brutas Mokgalo (both deceased) and Onkabetse Malope. Malope has since been turned into an accomplice witness.

They reportedly robbed at gun point Trojan Security Company over P2 million that was being transported from Gaborone to Bank Gaborone in Ghanzi. The case was postponed following a plea by the defence attorney, Mr Gosiame Digangwa to have the matter postponed as he was not ready to proceed with cross examination.

Mr Digangwa requested for postponement on the basis that there was shocking revelation from the state witness that compeled him to consult further with his clients.  He made the application after the chief prosecution counsel, Ms Thato Dibeela closed examination of the first state witness, Malope.

Molepolole Magistrate Faith Damini-N’gandu’s raised a concern at the pace at which the case was moving, saying it was disappointing that the court was constantly failing to make progress in most of the set dates. When the case resumes next year, about 33 witnesses will testify against Zikhale and Kangangwane.

Malope during cross examination told court that the accused persons took part in the sharing of the stolen money at Zikhale’s place at Bokaa in Kgatleng.  He said Kangangwane was not present at that time but was later given his share in Gaborone.

Ms Dibeela did not oppose the postponement. Meanwhile, three Letlhakane men and a woman aged between 31 and 36 facing a single count of having found in possession of 71.5 kg Copper suspected to be stolen appeared briefly at the magistrate court on Friday.

Magistrate N’gandu granted the four suspects a conditional bail and each of them were to pay P2000 and report to Molepolole police every Friday between 0730 and 1800 hours.

They are, Moatlhodi Moabi, Moitatodi Mareko, Isaac Sebopelo, unemployed males aged between 35 and 38 years and 31-year-old Bonang Semadi, a Sales Consultant with Botswana Life. ENDS
