Kazungula police station commander, Superintendent Vusimusi Jorowe has advised motorists who use the Nata/Kazungula road to be wary of hitch hikers.
Supt Jorowe said they received a report from a British national who was travelling alone from Maun to Kasane, who gave a man who was hitch hiking at Nata a ride.
He said the man claimed that he was a soldier based at Botswana Defence Force Camp in Kazungula. Supt Jorowe said the British man reported that roughly 10kms from the village, the hitch hiker asked the driver to drop him off in the middle of nowhere.
“As he disembarked, he grabbed the driver’s two mobile phones placed on the dashboard and fled into the dark,” he said. The station commander explained that no arrests were made and that the driver escaped unharmed.
Supt Jorowe advised motorist not to give strangers rides especially, if they are travelling alone. “If anything, the driver should rather travel alone than to offer a lift to a stranger,” said Supt Jorowe. The station commander also reminded residents on the importance of safe keeping valuables and locking up their homes. ENDS
