Police in Jwaneng recorded 115 traffic offences during the Toyota 1000km Desert Race over the weekend, says the station commander, Superintendant Theriso Thatayotlhe.
Mr Thatayotlhe said in an interview that the offences included speeding, failure to obey traffic signs and failure to wear safety belts. Thirty-six of the 115 offenders had already paid admission-of-guilt fines.
He said 27 people were tested for alcohol content in their blood: 19 of them were above the permissible limit, seven were below the limit and only one person did not cooperate during the test.
Police also recorded nine minor accidents that resulted in minor injuries. All the victims were treated and released from the hospital the same day.
He said one car was broken into and a handbag stolen. The handbag had P100 and ATM cards. He also said a foreigner’s camping tent was broken into and an undisclosed amount was stolen.
He said no suspects had been arrested in connection to the two cases but investigations were going on. He applauded the motorists for using the Sir Seretse Khama high way responsibly and for cooperating with the police as no major accident was recorded.
He encouraged the spectators to cooperate with the police in future, especially at the spectator points so as to avoid incidents that might lead to negative consequences. He encouraged spectators to always use the official camp site where there was security. ENDS
