A middle aged man has survived a lion attack.

Officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Chabaesele Kesupetswe confirmed the incident in an interview noting that it took place at Gumare while the man and six others were looking for cattle.

He explained that the seven men aged between 18 and 21 went out with some dogs to look for their missing cattle in the bush. He said while in the bush, the men heard the dogs barking on the other side and they went there to see what they were barking at, they were taken by surprise when a lion charged on them.

Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said as the men ran for their lives, the lion caught one of them and bit his legs leaving him with serious injuries. He said since one of them had a gun he managed to kill the lioness, which had cubs.

Other men who managed to escape reported the matter to the police and the injured man was rushed to Gumare Primary Hospital where he is reported to be recovering.

Meanwhile, Maun police have embarked on a massive search for some men who allegedly robbed Maduo Lodge on Tuesday. Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said about five men entered the lodge and robbed the receptionist laptops, cell phones and undisclosed amount of cash.

He said the men who covered their faces with masks went to the lodge on the early hours and assaulted the security guard leaving him with serious injuries on the head. The officer commanding said they suspected that the culprits used sharp instruments to assault the security guard.

The suspects then went to the reception and started beating up the receptionist and managed to take away cash, laptops and cell phones and disappeared.

Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said the security guard was  rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital and later referred to Nyangwagwe Referral Hospital in Francistown while the receptionist sustained minor injuries.

Still in Maun, police have arrested five men who refused to stop when police signaled them to do so. He said the men only stopped after police fired warning shots.

Senior Superintendent Kesupetswe said the incident took place at Old Mall Tuesday night as the men suspected to be criminals refused to stop while police tried to stop them.

He said they could not link the culprits with the robbery incident that happened at Maduo Lodge because they could not identify their faces.

He said the men are in police custody while investigations continue. ENDS
