Power cable theft on rise in Oodi
08 Jun 2014
Head of Oodi police post, Inspector Victor Leshiba has expressed concern over the escalating theft of Botswana Power Corporation electricity cables in the village.
Speaking in an interview recently, Inspector Leshiba said the crime statistics showed an average of two to three incidents per week adding that it was hard for them to catch the culprits as there were no street lights for people to see those culprits in action.
“These criminals steal the cables late at night knowing that no one will see them in the dark,” he said. Inspector Leshiba further said the culprits mostly targeted unoccupied houses in the village, which they spoted earlier and assessed the situation before stealing at night.
Cable theft has led the Oodi police post to schedule night duty for some police officers to ensure that they are able to catch the criminals if they attempt to steal the cables.
Inspector Leshiba further said they do not know who commits these crimes, whether it is citizens or foreigners but indicated that the ones they caught last year were Batswana.
He also asked members of the public to report anyone they are suspicious of so that they attend to them well on time before any damage is done.
Since these culprits are attracted by unoccupied houses, Inspector Leshiba advised the community to desist from leaving their houses unoccupied. ENDS
