Three Drums and a lion slated for Maitisong
20 Mar 2014
On March 26, performing arts fanatics will flock Maitisong for the premier of Three Drums and a lion, courtesy of Alliance Française.
Three drums and a lion is a cinema concert that combines documentary clips, animation, and a live DJ performance. This cine-concert is part of the Southern Africa tour. The project will go to four cities in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Botswana.
The film is a poetic mixture of three movies: Jean Rouch’s Battle on the Great River, which was documented in the year 1958 and runs 30 minutes. Another, still by Jean Rouch, Au Pays des mages noirs in 1947, and finally Extraits by Christelle Enault which is an animation that takes 10 minutes.
The play is in tribute to the famous Jean Rouch, a French film director and ethnologist, who was born on 31 May 1917 in Paris and died on 18 February 2004 in Niger.
He is well known for his like for direct cinema and for his ethnographic films on African peoples such as the Dogon and their customs. Considered to be the creator of ethno-fiction, a sub-genre of docu-fiction, he is one of the theorists and founders of visual anthropology.
Coming along is Jeremy Labelle, a musician who blends several cultural influences.
Musician Labelle’s universe is inspired by the combination of his Indian Ocean roots and the techno resistance movement of Detroit.
He unites traditional Maloya of Réunion Island and electronic music in hybrid performances between vinyl records and computer techniques where traditional music from Africa and India, contemporary music, techno and experimental music meet.
In addition the show will be adorned by Christelle Enault who is a talented illustrator working with several national magazines and newspapers.
She lets us into her remarkable/singular universe, which reminds us of the sacred, the ritual, the magic and the animal.
Further, they will be joined by Camille Touzé who loves innovative artistic exchanges; he produces and supports several Creole creations which mix pictures, drawings and music.
This event is proudly sponsored by Alliance Française, Région Réunion, France Volontaire, European Union, Air Austral, French Institut, Braveheart, Maitisong.
For all in love with arts, film and contemporary music, this will be a perfect platform to engage in a mind blowing performance of Trois Tambours Three drums and a lion. Tickets are available at Maitisong and Alliance Française. Grab yours for P70 and come and enjoy this cine-concert. Ends
