Pre-independence machinery artefacts in demand

16 Mar 2014

The public has been encouraged to identify pre-independence vehicles, machinery and other artefacts that could be used as a form of public art.

Speaking during a full council meeting in Sowa recently, Sowa town mayor, Moagisi Lekwapa requested the public to identify objects which might have been abandoned in their area.

He said the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, through the national museum, has been tasked by the Office of the President to take inventory of old vehicles monuments, sculptures, and machinery for possible display at designated spaces around the country such as kgotla, office grounds, parks and gardens.

Mayor Lekwapa also said the request came after an observation by the office that there were some old disused vehicles parked in private and official offices that could be rehabilitated and exhibited to the public for appreciation.

That, he said, would add value to public art that has recently been expanded in scope and application.

The mayor highlighted that the purpose behind public art was to enrich the community by evoking meaning in the public forum.

“Public artwork is meant to inspire higher thought about the community or in general, and can help raise awareness or give remembrance to events,” he said.

Furthermore, Mayor Lekwapa said public artwork was also meant to be seen and experienced as a work of art, it can help inspire and provide perspective in any subject at hand.

He said the noble request would not only enhance the surroundings, but also go a long way in preserving the history and heritage of the country.

On other issues, Mayor Lekwapa noted that government has adopted a new electronic payment system for World War II veterans, destitute and pensioners introduced by Botswana Post.

Thus, he urged councillors to disseminate information to the relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries.

He said registration of beneficiaries in the system commenced on March 3 and would end on the March 31 while the new system would be effected by April 1. ENDS
