Magistrate Orders State to Hand Over More Statements in Uches Case
11 Aug 2026
Extension II Chief Magistrate Ms Kamogelo Mmesi has ordered the state to provide additional witness statements to the defence in the case of Nigerian national Njoku Uche, who is charged with aiding and abetting a crime.
The magistrate directed that defence counsel be furnished with a further witness statement and three forensic affidavits that the state intends to use.
The order followed a request by defence lawyer Mr Farayi Mahwite, who told the court that after liaising with the prosecution he had realised that several outstanding statements had not been served on the defence team.
Uche, 53, is charged with aiding six Mexican nationals who were deported to Mozambique in connection with trafficking and dealing in illegal substances.
Prior to their deportation, each of the six was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and fined P5,000 for entering the country illegally by Magistrate Mmesi.
The case is scheduled for a case management conference on October 15.
