Moagi Acquitted and Discharged
29 Oct 2026
Former Minister of Minerals and Energy Mr Lefoko Moagi has been acquitted and discharged of a corruption charge involving P4.7 million.
He was discharged by Regional Magistrate Mr Mareledi Dipate today, who said the State had not proved its case and noted that no obligation is placed on the accused to produce evidence against himself. He further noted that the alleged company directors were not called to testify.
He added that the State could not show how the accused indeed influenced the award of eight prospecting licences to New Energy, as due diligence was done elsewhere.
The charges alleged that he solicited P4.7 million from directors of New Energy (Pty) Ltd and Riders (Pty) Ltd, companies that did business with his ministry.
The State alleges that in April 2024, while serving as minister, Moagi received P4.7 million from New Energy (Pty) Ltd through Wise Creatives Investments (Pty) Ltd.
He was allegedly given a bank card to access the funds from the company and its associated entity, Riders (Pty) Ltd. ENDS
