Botswana to Experience El Nio conditions

Botswana is likely to experience El Niño conditions during the 2026/2027 rainfall season, with the country expected to face below-normal rainfall, prolonged dry spells, above-normal temperatures and an increased risk of wildland fires.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, issued through the Department of Meteorological Services (DMS), there is a greater than 90 per cent probability that El Niño conditions will dominate the country’s summer rainfall season from October 2026 to March 2027.
The ministry says although rainfall is still expected, it is likely to be erratic, with longer dry periods and increased climate variability. It explains that favourable rainfall received during the previous season has resulted in abundant grass and vegetation, creating high fuel loads that could increase the risk of large veld and forest fires during the peak fire season beginning in August.
The statement says delayed rains and prolonged dry spells may reduce crop yields, place pressure on water resources and livestock production, and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups.
The ministry further warns that the expected hot, dry and windy conditions could result in extensive veld and forest fires, threatening communities, biodiversity, tourism assets, infrastructure and livelihoods.
It urges government institutions, local authorities, emergency services, farmers, the private sector and the public to take proactive measures, including conserving water, implementing drought and wildfire preparedness plans, safeguarding livestock and reporting veld fires promptly.
The ministry says the Department of Meteorological Services will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updated seasonal forecasts, advisories and early warning information. It also urges Batswana to remain informed, prepared and responsive throughout the season. ENDS
