Attempted Murder accused released on Bail

Thirty-nine-year-old Otse woman (Galaletsang Ntwaagae) accused of attempted murder of her baby has been released on bail and ordered to pay a sum of P1000.
The woman who is charged with a single count of attempted murder of a new born baby boy on April 25, at Lesetlhana ward in Otse contrary to section 217 of the penal code of the Laws of Botswana appeared before Lobatse Magistrates Court, senior magistrate Ms Vinga Kedikilwe- Johnson on Monday.  
Ms Tamela Mbulawa of prosecution told court that the investigations had been completed and that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions was still awaiting a complete file of the case from the Police. In addition, Ms Mbulawa stated that the they were not against the being granted bail adding that the accused was held in custody as a safety precautionary measure for the child. 
 “The child has been released from hospital and is now under the care of the accused’s sister in Gaborone. For this reason, the prosecution will not continue to stand in the way of the accused’s liberty,” she said. 
She said that since the prosecution has sealed investigations including the psychiatric evaluation results, they would not stand in the way of the accused being granted bail. She put it before court that one of the accused bail conditions was that she must only be allowed to visit the baby under supervision of a social worker.
Senior Magistrate Ms Kedikilwe- Johnson Magistrate took a decision to release the accused on bail and ordered her to pay the sum of P1000 on condition that she appears in court as and when she was required. Additionally, she ordered that when she visited her victim- her baby, she must do so in the presence of a social welfare officer. The accused will appear again in Court on August 18. ENDS
