Mogae Steady and Disciplined Steward of Nation

Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe has described Former President Festus Mogae as a steady and disciplined steward of the nation.
He said he was a leader who shaped a defining moment in Botswana’s history who guided the country through its most challenging years with wisdom, restraint, and humanity.
He reflected on Mogae’s humility and discipline, noting that despite rising from modest beginnings to the highest office, he remained grounded and always prioritised the long-term interests of the nation over short-term popularity.
Mr Gaolathe highlighted his key roles in shaping Botswana’s economic foundations through the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Botswana, and later as he strengthened fiscal discipline and national institutions.
The Vice President also praised Mogae’s difficult but necessary economic decisions that safeguarded Botswana’s stability during global pressures, as well as his courageous leadership during the HIV/AIDS crisis, where he responded with honesty, compassion, and transparency.
