BNF advocates policy shift

02 Nov 2026

Botswana National Front (BNF) has called for a clearly defined relationship between the ruling party and the government, emphasising the need for policies that advance the livelihoods of Batswana, while ensuring party members understand and support the government agenda.

Speaking at a press conference to update the media on party policies on Thursday, BNF vice president, Mr Moeti Mohwasa underscored the importance of strategic policy development, cadre deployment, decent wages, beneficiation, and the appointment of capable individuals to strategic positions.

Mr Mohwasa said being part of the ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change required members to participate in shaping laws and policies to ensure that government programmes were implemented effectively.

He said the party must remain involved in guiding the country’s development direction, particularly in areas affecting employment and the economic well-being of citizens.

To address these needs, Mr Mohwasa noted that the BNF had been continuously developing and reviewing its policies to respond to contemporary challenges.

Former BNF president Mr Otsweletse Moupo, who also addressed the media, said cadre deployment was a standard aspect of exercising political power.

He argued that the practice could successfully help a ruling party implement its mandate when strictly guided by merit, competence and flexibility.

Mr Moupo observed that the concept was not foreign to the global political landscape, citing Brazil’s Workers’ Party and South Africa’s African National Congress, as living examples of political organisations that had utilised cadre deployment.

He cautioned that cadre deployment should not be confused with nepotism a concern frequently raised in public debates over politically influenced appointments.

Mr Moupo maintained that a successful policy must carefully balance political alignment with professional merit and competence to guarantee effective government delivery. ENDS
