Molapisi urges Batswana not to despair

Botswana People’s Party (BPP) president, Mr Motlatsi Molapisi has assured Batswana that promises made by the ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will be fulfilled.

Addressing BPP delegates at the party’s first leadership forum in Tatisiding on April 25, Mr Molapisi said while some promises had already been implemented, some would be done funds permitting.

One such a promise, he said was the P4,000 minimum wage, which he said would be implemented in a manner that would not result in some companies retrenching staff.

He said UDC’s goal was to improve living standards of Batswana through better health infrastructure and equitable distribution of social services.

Mr Molapisi further reiterated the party’s commitment to the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition.

He said all parties in the coalition were equal adding that no member was above the other.

In addition, he expressed concern that majority of the party’s

councillors and members of parliament, all of whom are ministers, failed to attend the forum, adding that such a conduct would not be condoned.

The BPP has 34 councillors and five MPs.

He further informed delegates that the BPP would hold two more major conferences this year, one in May and an elective congress in July or August to elect a new national executive committee.

He appealed to members to work with party leadership to retain all current seats and increase them, saying this would require aggressive recruitment of new members and full support for the coalition.

For her part, BPP Secretary General, Ms Mmantlha Sankoloba

spoke on true leadership, saying those who needed to win the next election must be trusted and avoid promising electorate ‘heaven’ while country faced a financial crisis.

BPP Vice President Professor, Phillip Bulawa also raised concern about delegates who arrived late for the forum, warning that such behaviour would not help the party or the coalition retain power if they were serious about victory. ENDS
