BOTSWANA MARKS PURPLE DAY WITH CALL TO END EPILEPSY STIGMA
21 Mar 2026
Epilepsy continues to affect millions of people worldwide, yet stigma and discrimination remain major challenges for those living with the condition, says Minister of International Relations Dr Phenyo Butale. ‎ ‎Speaking during the commemoration of Purple Day today in Gaborone, Dr Butale says too many individuals living with epilepsy face barriers in education, employment and social participation simply because of lack of awareness and understanding,â€. ‎ ‎The minister says Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions globally, affecting an estimated 50 million people, with nearly 80 percent living in low- and middle-income countries. ‎ ‎“In Botswana, it is believed that between five and ten percent of the population in each district may be living with the condition, translating to thousands of children, young people and adults. Many of them are capable of living full and productive lives when they receive proper medical care, support and understanding from their communities,†Dr Butale adds. ‎ ‎Purple Day, commemorated annually on March 26, was founded in 2008 by Cassidy Megan, who sought to raise awareness and assure others living with epilepsy that they are not alone. ‎ ‎Minister Butale says in Botswana, the day is marked by the Purple Walk, a growing platform for advocacy, education and solidarity. ‎ ‎The initiative he further says sends a strong message that people living with epilepsy deserve respect, equal opportunities and full participation in society. ‎ ‎Dr Butale further highlights government’s commitment to strengthening health systems, promoting awareness and supporting initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for people living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. ‎ ‎“This requires collaboration between government, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations and the community at large,†he says. ‎Source : BOPA
