Licensing of teachers imperative

12 Mar 2026

Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka has appealed to teachers to take advantage of the ongoing registration for teaching license undertaken by the Botswana Teaching Professionals Council (BOTEPCO).

Ms Kgafela-Mokoka said this in Etsha 6 when addressing teachers at Etsha 6 Junior Secondary School on Monday.  She said it was evident that most teachers who were permanently employed were lagging behind in registration for licensing which might disadvantage them in future when the registration period elapsed.

The minister observed that licensing of teachers was a necessity for recognition and regulation of teaching as a profession in the same wavelength as other regulated professions across the sectors, such as doctors and lawyers.

She said registration and licensing were intended to protect the teaching profession, saying a qualification on its own was not enough for one to be a teacher. On other matters, Ms Kgafela-Mokoka said infrastructure refurbishment and expansion were among her ministry’s top priorities.

She observed that shortage of classrooms and staff accommodation were common challenges in schools around the country, with some students using other facilities for learning other than classrooms.

In his remarks, school head of Etsha 6 Junior Secondary School Mr Keibinelemang Kwenaetsile said the school had challenges of shortage of staff accommodation and classrooms.  Mr Kwenaetsile said the school had 954 students of whom 487 were on the school’s boarding facility.

When commenting, one of the senior teachers Mr Gosegomang Monnaatsie said there was shortage of resources required for practical subjects such as Design and Technology. Mr Monnaatsie said the school needed internet connectivity and replacement of some teachers responsible for Commerce and Accounting. BOPA
