As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations and following the success of last year’s Winter Desert Bush Walk, organisers on Tuesday handed over more than P242,000 raised to various community project beneficiaries.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Local Organising Committee member, Mr Gabobofane Gabobofane said the beneficiary categories spanned education, health, youth, sport and cultural development, community development and environmental health.

He said beneficiaries included Maokane Primary School in Maokane, which received P104,000 worth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services.

Learn To Play institution received P20,000 to enhance its learning solutions programmes such as the Parent Playbox – a 52-week programme that equips caregivers with resources to engage in purposeful play-based activities with their children.

Other beneficiaries are Jwaneng Rugby Club, Ministry of Sport and Arts, as well as Jwaneng Town Council, among others.

He said since its inception in 2014, Desert Bush Walk had raised over P4 million towards socio-economic development of underprivileged communities across Botswana, benefiting more than 80 000 pupils and numerous communities.

“In addition to supporting education and community projects, the Desert Bush Walk also supports government efforts to address national challenges such as promoting wellness and combating non-communicable diseases,” he said.

The event’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) board chairperson, Mr Archibald Ngakaagae, announced that the next Winter Desert Bush Walk would take place from July 23 to 25.

He said activities would include a 10-kilometre night walk on July 24, a market day running throughout the event period and participation by Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho. ENDS
