Bakwena Comply with FMD Slaughter Restrictions
07 Feb 2026
Law enforcement officers today conducted spot checks in Molepolole to monitor compliance with government restrictions on the slaughter of cloven-hoofed animals following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
The inspections targeted funerals and local butcheries, where authorities assessed adherence to the temporary control measures aimed at preventing the spread of the disease.
The Bakwena community has largely welcomed the restrictions and is making visible efforts to comply with the law.
At several funerals held today, families sourced meat from the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) in line with regulations, while chicken featured prominently on menus as an alternative to beef.
Some households that could not afford meat opted for simpler meals such as bread, starch and beans.
However, the restrictions are taking a toll on local businesses. Most butcheries in Molepolole remain closed, while a few that have reopened are limited to selling chicken.
Butchery owners say rising purchase costs have forced them to increase prices, a situation that is discouraging customers and resulting in significant loss of business.
Authorities have indicated that monitoring exercises will continue to ensure compliance and to support national efforts to curb the spread of FMD. ENDS
