16 learners in custody for assault
12 Aug 2025
Sixteen male learners of Letlhakane Senior Secondary School have been remanded in custody for allegedly assaulting another male pupil of the same school on August 9.
The accused, who were arrested on August 10 and 11, appeared before Senior Magistrate Atlanang Manchwe of Letlhakane Magistrate Court on August 12.
They will be kept at Ikago Rehabilitation Centre in Molepolole until August 18, when they will appear in court again.
Investigating officer, Sergeant Seonyatseng Kereelwang of Letlhakane Police Gender and Child Protection Unit, pleaded with the court to remand the accused in custody given the freshness of the matter and pending ongoing investigations.
He noted that the police were yet to arrest another possible suspect and still to record statements from other witnesses.
He therefore said releasing the accused on bail might compromise investigations since most of the witnesses were Letlhakane Senior Secondary pupils, where the accused were also schooling.
The investigating officer further said the community was still enraged; hence the need to protect the accused.
He further said the victim was released from hospital and currently recuperating at home from injuries he sustained on the face and other parts of the body. ENDS
