28 Jul 2025

Kgosi Simon Nkgageng of Tatisiding Customary Court has sentenced Israel Case to five years imprisonment for stealing livestock.

The sentence was delivered on Thursday following the convict plea of guilty.

Case of Maitengwe village was reported to have on July 7, 2025 stolen a female goat belonging to Mr Fanikiso Mafa, which he subsequently slaughtered.

He was arrested on July 23 following a tip-off from members of the community.

Upon his arrest, police found him with the remaining goat carcass.

The carcass were submitted as evidence to the court alongside a disposal certificate (BP 129) from the Magistrate Court.

During sentencing, Kgosi Nkgageng emphasised that stock theft, particularly involving small livestock was on the rise in the village and that stern penalties were necessary to deter such crimes.

In mitigation, Case asked the court for a lighter sentence stating that he was the sole caregiver for his child.

However, following amendments to the Penal Code, stock theft cases now carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, regardless of whether the culprit was a first-time offender.

Sergeant Charles Silas of the Botswana Police Service prosecuted the case. ENDS
