Two young men are in police custody in relation to two separate rape incidents that occurred in Mabutsane District over the President’s Day holidays.
In an interview with BOPA today, Mabutsane police station commander, Superintendent Modironyana Lekone said a 27-year-old man of Moselebe ward in Khakhea would soon be arraigned for allegedly raping a 16-year old Form II pupil on Monday night.
”It is reported that the girl and her friend were sent to a tuckshop at around eight in the evening when the man pounced on them. While the friend managed to run in an attempt to seek help, the suspect allegedly took his victim to his place and repeatedly raped her until the following afternoon,” he said.
Supt Lekone said in another incident, a 19-year-old young man of Tshube ward in Sekoma was arrested in connection with a rape incident that took place on Tuesday. He said it was reported that a 19-year-old girl was coming from a night vigil to collect money from someone in the neighbouring yard when she met her fate.
“According to the report, she was at a night vigil and left to collect money she was owed by someone in the neighbourhood, but when she got there she found the suspect who gave her the money. Just when she was leaving, he grabbed her and raped her outside the yard, before dragging her back inside the house and repeatedly raped her until the following morning,” explained Supt Lekone.
The station commander urged women to avoid walking unaccompanied, particularly at night. He said the increasing number of such incidents called for women to exercise caution to protect themselves. He also implored them to raise alarm and call for help when they find themselves in compromising situations for neighbours to assist. ENDS
