Constitutional Court establishment in offing
23 Jul 2025
President Advocate Duma Boko says there are plans to establish a constitutional court before the constitutional review process implementation.
Addressing the Alliance for Progressives (AP) national congress in Serowe on Sunday, Mr Boko who is also Botswana National Front leader, said the intention was to submit the new constitution draft to the constitutional court for certification.
“We are going to debate the fundamentals and also engage on what a constitution must present. We craft it together, we examine it thoroughly and we take it before a tribunal of legal experts to certify for us,” he said.
On other issues, he reiterated his disapproval for the current tendering process, saying it created room for corruption. He further told Alliance for Progressives members that all voices in the coalition were important in building a successful government. He therefore urged the members that when they engaged in their congress, they should reflect carefully and honestly on the challenges facing the country.
He also said government was fully committed to attaining all that it had promised Batswana and it would not fail, despite the gloomy times of the economy. President Boko noted that though the country’s economy would be diversified and not only confined to diamonds for revenue, the diamonds must sell as the country was now faced with fiscal challenges.
He said the Umbrella for Democratic for Chance had inherited a crumbling healthcare system, a collapsing education system, staggering levels of poverty among Batswana and high rate of unemployment among other things, hence the need to develop strategies to move the country from where it was, to where it ought to be.
