Preparations are ongoing for the 51st Ghanzi Agriculture Show, which starts on Monday, and is nationally recognised for showcasing the finest breeds of cattle in Botswana's beef industry.
In an interview, the Ghanzi Show Trust public relations officer, Ms Francina Tjinae said there would be 37 livestock exhibitors specialising in cattle breeds such as Brahman, Simmental, Droughtmaster, Dexter, Sussex, Braunveih and Pinzgauer. The goats category will include Boer goats and Kalahari reds, while the sheep category will have Dorper, Meat masters and Van rooys. Ms Tjinae added that government and Parastatals exhibitors would also promote and market diverse business products and services at the show.
She also said goat judging would be conducted on Monday, sheep judging on Tuesday and cattle judging on Wednesday. She said the Miss Ghanzi Show pageant would be conducted on Thursday, livestock auction on Friday, the horse race on Saturday after the official opening ceremony by President Advocate Duma Boko, and later the prize giving gala dinner on Saturday night. Football matches will be played on Sunday to wrap up the events.
Ms Tjinae said, ministers of Lands and Agriculture, Roads and Infrastructure, Sports and Arts, Water and Human Settlements would grace the event.
She said this year’s theme: Sowing Seeds of Innovation for Agricultural Transformation, was befitting as it encouraged farmers to adopt innovative technologies to transform the agricultural sector. Ms Tjinae said the farmer’s efforts, coupled with the newly established economic transformation strategy, would help government to diversify the economy and achieve food security.
She said free internet connection would be available at the show ground and there would also be live streaming of the events.
“The initiative of livestreaming events of the day, would afford exhibitors, to watch the daily activities at the comfort of their stalls,” she explained.
She also said there would be televisions sets strategically positioned around the show ground and at the horse track field for spectators to watch the races.
Furthermore, Ms Tjinae said the Ghanzi based tourism and hospitality establishments were fully booked and to augment the situation, Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) issued a waiver for establishments of local camp sites. She implored service providers to use the waiver to their advantage, ensure compliance and charge reasonable prices.
She added that there would be a temporary 24-hour health clinic at the site for emergency services. On other issues, Ms Tjinae said Sandfire Motheo Mine was the platinum sponsor of the show with cash amounting to P350,000, and BTO would sponsor the horse race, while other sponsors were Botswana Oil and other local entities.
