Region to reward high performers

The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education’s academic and sports achievements in the north continue to project the North East region as a beacon of hope, which repeatedly makes the nation proud.

Giving a keynote address at the inaugural Letlhafula fundraising ceremony held at Francistown Senior Secondary School on July 5, Mayor of Francistown Mr Gaone Majere said the North East region, particularly schools in Francistown, had consistently performed impressively in national examinations.

“It is undeniable that the North East region is excelling in the national examinations across all levels,” he stated.

The Mayor, who contributed P5 000 towards the annual North East region excellence awards set for August 8 in Francistown, highlighted the region’s remarkable performance in the 2024 Botswana Examination Council national results. He noted an impressive 83.7 per cent ABC pass rate at the Junior Certificate Examination level and a commendable 28.8 per cent ABC pass rate at the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education level.

“This achievement speaks volumes about the determination of schools in the North East region to reach new heights,” said Mr Majere.

Mr Majere described Letlhafula as more than just a harvest celebration; it was a cherished tradition that embodied the spirit of Botswana. By choosing to use the traditional term ‘Letlhafula,’ he said the organisers had highlighted a symbol of unity, history and a deep-rooted connection to the land. He encouraged participants to savour the traditional foods, enjoy vibrant music and dance, and appreciate the beautiful traditional attire while reflecting on the importance of preserving these customs for future generations.

In support of the sentiment, Kgosi Thabo Wasetso of Tati Town Customary Court praised the Letlhafula concept for aligning with the mission of safeguarding Setswana culture. He noted that Letlhafula symbolised a time to enjoy a variety of foods following the harvest, which reinforced the theme of food security. Kgosi Wasetso expressed concern about the loss of cultural practices among younger generations, stating therefore that events promoting culture were a welcomed approach.
