Chief magistrate denies murder accused bail

07 Jul 2025

Chief Magistrate, Ms Kamogelo Mmesi  of Extension II Magistrate Court has refused to release on bail Kabo Garethusane, who is accused of the murder of his girlfriend, Goabaone Mothofela at Gaborone’s Old Naledi location on June 15.

Garethusane (35), who is not represented, had pleaded with the court to grant him bail, arguing that he was taking care of his child as well as his elderly blind mother. He also told the court that he was the family bread winner, hence his prolonged incarceration could disadvantage his child and mother.

“Ever since my incarceration I do not know of the wellbeing of my child and my mother,” Garethusane said on Thursday.

However, Magistrate Mmesi reiterated his previous court sitting stance that the accused was not yet a candidate of bail. She said the accused was facing a serious offence of murder, hence the court could not grant him bail as the prosecution should be given an opportunity to do its investigations.

“Your application will therefore not be acceded to,” Chief Magistrate Mmesi said, adding that the application would only be considered when the prosecution had completed its investigation.

The accused person, who is unemployed, had his remanded in custody extended, and is scheduled to appear again for status hearing on July 17. ENDS
