Abandoned council houses worrisome

The Kanye District Council (KyDC) is facing significant challenges regarding numerous unoccupied and abandoned destitute houses that have fallen into disrepair.
During a consultative meeting in Logaba Ward, by Member of Parliament for Kanye West, Mr Victor Phologolo, Principal Social Affairs Officer for Kanye District, Ms Tuduetso Senthumoleng, highlighted the issue.
The primary reasons cited including lack of essential amenities such as electricity, water, and furniture.
Ms Senthumoleng clarified that the council does not provide electricity or furniture, emphasising that it is the responsibility of beneficiaries to secure these necessary amenities on their own.
This year, Kanye District Council, through the Department of Social and Community Development, has been awarded a single house, which they decided to donate to flood victims in Lorolwane village.
Meanwhile Mmatshitshwane West Village Development Committee member Ms Keiterele Modise, also urged the council to assist a needy individual in Logaba Ward by constructing a house.
In the same meeting, Mr Phologolo announced that all maintenance works linked to Constituency Community Projects (CCP) would prioritise youth for employment.
He stated that pairing such youths with trainees from the Construction Industry Trust Fund (CITF) would equip them with valuable skills, enhancing their capacities to start businesses in the future.
The MP confirmed that contracts with CITF would award certificates of completion to the youths who successfully executed their assigned projects, thereby fostering local expertise and reducing dependence on outside labour.
Mr Phologolo stressed the new administration’s commitment to revitalising vocational training centers, recognising their crucial role in diversifying the economy. He encouraged youth to join brigades for training to acquire skills that would help them establish businesses, noting that locals were losing out on lucrative job opportunities to foreigners, especially in construction and mechanical fields.
He asserted that graduates from vocational training centres had potential to create jobs for university graduates, citing the high demand for skills developed through brigade training. ENDS
