Consular offers tips to Macheng JSS pupils

23 Jun 2025

Macheng Junior Secondary School received an inspiring message on Saturday from Ms Annelin Vista, the Consular for the Philippines in Botswana.

Speaking at the Baitshepi Social Club fourth donation session to the school, Ms Vista emphasised that despite hardships, students could still realise their dreams.

“What matters is attitude, your discipline, and your hard work. Every day, try to improve yourself, even in small ways. Help your teachers without being asked. If you see them carrying a box, just say ‘Madam, can I help you?’ If they’re carrying things and cannot open the door, assist them and open the door, saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you," she told the learners.

Ms Vista’s words resonated with the students and staff alike, highlighting the importance of good manners and proactive kindness.

The event was part of the fourth donation drive organised by Baitshepi Social Club, a group of media personnel and community volunteers committed to supporting less privileged learners.  Since its inception in 2022, the club’s efforts have focused on uplifting the education of disadvantaged students. Ms Lucretia Chima, the club’s chairperson, shared the journey behind their charity work.

“We used to be friends who enjoyed relaxing together until one day, we realised there are children in the countryside who need our help,” she explained.

Since then, the club has been consistent, donating twice a year, with the aim of improving school results and ensuring no child is disadvantaged due to social circumstances. Their donations have included sanitary pads, clothing, and shoes.

“Initially, we provided about 500 sanitary pads and clothing, but we saw some students wearing flip-flops in the cold, so we started a shoe drive to address that need,” Ms Chima said.

She emphasised that these donations aimed to make a tangible difference in students’ lives, helping them focus on their education without undue hardship.

The school headmaster, Mr Shadrack Keatlholetswe urged learners to work hard toward their futures and enjoy their youth with positive pursuits. He reflected on the challenges of student morale and vandalism, lamenting that some students seemed bored with schooling, leading to destructive behaviours.

Councilor Mr Tshetlha Sentlhaga commended the Baitshepi Social Club for their altruism.

“Their efforts serve as motivation for the kids,” he said.

He noted that the school’s performance has improved noticeably since the club’s interventions, with better rankings both regionally and nationally. He said the event underscored the importance of community support in shaping a brighter future for Botswana’s youth, fostering an environment where learners could thrive academically and personally.
