Turn to God for intervention - mayor

22 Jun 2025

The Mayor of Francistown, Mr Gaone Majere says prayer is the spiritual weapon, which can be used to fight gender-based violence (GBV).

Speaking during the Francistown District prayer against GBV in Francistown on Friday, Mr Majere said Batswana should believe in the power of divine intervention, looking at the alarming cases of GBV across the country.

However, Mr Majere said the prayer must also ignite action as the country sought healing and strength from God.

He said GBV continued to affect communities, silently invaded homes, relationships and spaces where love and safety should prevail.

“It affects women, men and children, cutting across age, social status and religion. GBV is not just a personal or family matter but it is a societal crisis, a violation of human rights, and an affront to the values we uphold as Batswana,” he added.

He said statistics from Botswana Police showed that a total of 52 rape cases were reported from January to May in Francistown.

This number, he said, showed that on average, the police recorded more than 10 rape cases in a month.

He warned that this trend called for a serious intervention to protect the society.

“As the City of Francistown, we affirm our zero-tolerance stance against gender-based violence. We are strengthening partnerships with the police, social workers, health services, traditional leaders and churches to create a network of protection and restoration,” he said.

Mr Majere challenged all to promote not just punishment for perpetrators but also support and healing for victims and survivors.

He commended the churches and faith leaders as the moral compass of our society.

“Use your pulpits to teach love, to rebuke violence and to encourage counselling and accountability,” appealed Mr Majere.

Mr Majere further advised Batswana to learn to do right, to seek justice and defend the oppressed.

He also advised the young people to reject harmful gender stereotypes and build relationships based on mutual respect.

“To every victim or survivor, you are not alone. Francistown stands with you. We hear you. We believe you. And we are working to ensure that your pain does not go unheard or unaddressed,” said Mr Majere. ENDS
