Indiscriminate waste disposal worrisome
20 Jun 2025
Kanye District Council has expressed growing concern over the increasing incidence of indiscriminate waste disposal throughout the area.
It has been observed that some individuals and private companies are disposing of waste in unauthorised locations, raising health and environmental risks for the community.
This was revealed by Chairperson Mr Morapedi Kgosithebe during full council session on Wednesday.
Mr Kgosithebe attributed this challenge to rapid urbanisation and population growth, which have strained the district’s waste collection capacity.
Council members voiced frustration over community members’ reluctance to pay waste collection fees, which they said exacerbated the problem.
“This situation forces residents to resort to burning waste as there are no better options available. The council needs to improve its waste management services to uphold its integrity and protect public health,” said councillor Pako Ramaselwana.
Addressing specific concerns, Councillor Mothibi Kelesitse from Marapalalo Ward highlighted issues of improper waste disposal around Mongala Mall and the council premises, especially in high-density areas. He also raised alarm over wastewater seeping from Seventh Day Adventist Hospital behind Mongala Mall, describing it as a health hazard and an eyesore along a key tourist route.
Kelesitse pointed out the absence of adequate sanitation facilities in densely populated areas, including some shopping centers, which contributed to uncleanliness.
He urged councilors to advocate for communities to refrain from dumping waste in unauthorized spaces.
Despite these challenges, the council commended community efforts, especially recognising Mohumagadi Masetsebi for leading ongoing village clean-up campaigns through her Stakeholder Committee. The council acknowledged that such initiatives foster community participation in environmental stewardship.
Threfore the chairperson called for collective responsibility in environmental management, emphasising the importance of proper waste disposal and sanitation to ensure a healthier, more attractive Kanye. ENDS
