Embrace fatherhood roles

University of Botswana Chancellor, Ms Tebelelo Seretse has called on men to embrace their roles as guardians of peace and dignity, urging them to be ‘true fathers of the nation.’
Speaking at the launch of the University of Botswana (UB) marathon in Gaborone on Wednesday, Ms Seretse underscored the importance of treating every woman with the respect and compassion as a daughter, sister, or mother.
“There is a need for men to treat every woman as they would do to their own family, deserving protection, respect and empathy,” she said. Ms Seretse condemned the rise in gender-based violence, urging men to abandon harmful practices and toxic notions of masculinity.
“To be a man is not to dominate, but to defend, wear protective armor not to destroy, but to shield our women,” she stated firmly. Her remarks come amid growing national concern about the safety and well-being of women and girls, following several high-profile cases of gender-based violence that sparked widespread outrage and national introspection.
As the country continues to confront deep-seated cultural challenges, Ms Seretse’s message stands out as both a moral appeal and a call to action. She envisions a future where masculinity was not defined by power over others, but by dignity, protection, and unwavering respect for all. She also urged men to fulfil their responsibilities as fathers, not to remain passive observers when women are in danger, but to step forward as protectors at all times.
Sharing similar sentiments, UB student Mr Mmoloki Masole said “violence against women is not strength, it is weakness, it is not leadership, it is failure.” He encouraged men to reflect on their roles within families and communities, calling on them to become defenders of justice and equality.
“Be the kind of man you would want protecting your mother. Be the kind of father your daughter can be proud of,” he added. ENDS
